SOLARIS ACQUIRES ‘THE CHIMERA CODE’, A THRILLING DEBUT FROM SHORT STORY WRITER WAYNE SANTOS!

Solaris, the multiple award-winning publisher of cutting-edge science fiction and fantasy, is thrilled to announce that it has acquired world rights to The Chimera Code by Wayne Santos, to be released in July 2020.

The deal was negotiated by Jennie Goloboy of the Donald Maass Agency and acquired by Editor Kate Coe in her first acquisition for Rebellion. The Chimera Code is scheduled for release in July 2020.

Acquiring editor, Kate Coe had this to say about the book:

“Wayne’s brilliant novel is a thrilling read, and mixes technomancy with fast-paced action and thoughtful asides on the nature of the digital world versus reality. I’m very excited for this to be my first commission for Solaris, and look forward to working with Wayne.”

Discussing the acquisition, the author commented:

“Chimera has been a long time in coming. If you ever got into a schoolyard discussion of ‘who would win in a fight between a cyborg and a wizard,’ this book attempts to answer that with various permutations. I’m very grateful to my agent, Jennie Goloboy on taking a chance on this, and to Kate Coe and Solaris for choosing Chimera.”

Solaris Books are excited to welcome Wayne Santos to their growing list of talented writers who are bringing fresh perspectives to genre fiction.

The Chimera Code is scheduled for release in both trade paperback and ebook in July 2020. Read on for more about the book and make sure to follow us for more updates about this title.

Everything’s for hire – even magic.

If you need something done, Cloke’s one of the best; a mercenary with some unusual talents and an attitude to match. But when she’s hired by a virtual construct to destroy the other copies of himself, and the down payment is a new magical skill, she knows this job is going to be a league harder than anything she’s ever done.

Assisted by the ghost of her best friend, a virtual reality superstar, a magic sword, a combat cyborg, a genius console jockey and the backing of the largest corporation in the world, Cloke’s got to find and destroy a resource that her enemies will go to any lengths to protect…

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Over the years, Wayne Santos has written copy for advertising agencies, scripts for television, and articles for magazines. THE KAFKA STORY YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED! JON STEINHAGEN’S THE HANGING ARTIST IS NOT TO BE MISSED!

Abaddon Books is thrilled to reveal the cover for The Hanging Artist, one of the most brilliant novels we’ll be publishing this year! Jon Steinhagen’s The Hanging Artist is a groundbreaking surrealist modern fantasy, perfect for detective nuts, Franz Kafka enthusiasts and lovers of quirky, irreverent comedy.

Coming from a fresh new voice, The Hanging Artist asks: What if Kafka did not succumb to tuberculosis at the age of forty? What if he found himself attended by the giant insect he once imagined in his own story The Metamorphosis? And what if he was the only one that could solve the strange, inexplicable murders taking place in Vienna?

With the kind of flair that only a playwright could wield, Steinhagen’s absurdist take on Kafka’s new lease of life is funny, masterful, utterly engrossing and not to be missed!

Read on for more about the book and click the links below to Pre-order your copy!

THE HANGING ARTIST
Jon Steinhagen

“Trust me,” the insect repeated. Franz did not.

What if Franz Kafka did not succumb to tuberculosis at the age of forty? What if he awoke the day after his supposed death to find himself attended by the giant insect he once imagined in his own story The Metamorphosis?

And what if he were recruited to investigate the bizarre circumstances surrounding a rash of mysterious hangings plaguing 1924 Vienna? Hangings that are possibly connected to an equally mysterious performer who commits suicide every night at the music hall (but cannot be connected to any crimes)?

The Hanging Artist leads the newly rehabilitated Franz Kafka on an absurdist round of discoveries, the solution of which is more fantastical than anything he imagined.

The Hanging Artist is available to Pre-order now!

SOLARIS SIGNS DEBUT AUTHOR ANDREW SKINNER’S STEEL FRAME!

Solaris, the multiple award-winning publisher of cutting edge science fiction and fantasy, is pleased to announce the acquisition of Steel Frame; a powerful and dramatic debut novel from South African writer Andrew Skinner.

The deal was negotiated by Jamie Cowen of the Ampersand agency and acquired by Commissioning Editor David Thomas Moore.

Discussing the acquisition, the author had this to say:

“I’m really stoked to be working on Steel Frame with Solaris. I set out wanting to write something soulful, for all its hard edges, and I think they’re a great fit. Expect clashing war-machines, endless skies and ancient secrets—and small moments of warmth hidden in between.”

Commissioning Editor, David T. Moore had this to add:

“You want a big, bright, loud action SF book about giant robots kicking the snot out of each other? Steel Frame’s got that. But there’s more to it as well; Rook’s recovery from the betrayal and loss that left her there, and the way she and the Juno bring each back from the brink, is one of the most thoughtful and considered things you’ll read this year.”

Solaris Books are excited to welcome Andrew Skinner to their growing list of talented writers who are bringing fresh perspectives to genre fiction.

Solaris has world rights to the title which will publish in both trade paperback and ebook in summer, 2019. Read on for more about the book and make sure to follow us for updates about this title!

STEEL FRAME
by Andrew Skinner

FLY HARD.

Rook is a jockey, a soldier whose life’s purpose is to fly ‘shells,’ huge robots that fight for the outer regions of settled space. When her shell is destroyed and her squad is killed, Rook is imprisoned, left stranded, scarred and broken. Hollow and helpless without her steel frame, she’s ready to call it quits.

When her cohort of prisoners are sold into indenture to NorCol, a vast frontier corporation, Rook’s given another shell—a near-decrepit Juno, as broken as she is and decades older—and sent to a rusting bucket of a ship on the end of the known space to patrol something called “The Eye,” a strange, unnerving permanent storm in space.

But they’re not alone.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Andrew Skinner grew up in South Africa’s coal-mining heartland, amidst orange dust and giant machinery. He now works as an archaeologist and anthropologist, interested in folklore, rain-making arts, and resistance; but the machines aren’t done with him yet. Steel Frame is his first novel. ABADDON BOOKS TO PUBLISH DEATH OF A CLONE, A HARD SCI-FI TITLE WITH A TWIST!

Abaddon Books, Rebellion Publishing’s cutting-edge imprint for smart and subversive fiction, is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Death of a Clone by Alex Thomson, a hard science fiction and mystery crossover title that deals in the unexpected, set to be released in 2018.

Alex Thomson, represented by Red Sofa Literary Afency, is an exciting new voice in science fiction and Abaddon is pleased to bring his particular brand of genius to readers everywhere.

Abaddon Editor-in-Chief, David Thomas Moore, had this to say:

“‘Miss Marple meets action sci-fi’ isn’t an obvious fit, but Thomson’s taut, claustrophic thriller pulls it off. This is a clever, original story that fans of cozy mystery and hard SF alike will delight in. I’m very excited to be putting it out there.”

Thomson commented:

“After many months of scribbling down ideas and plot twists into a dog-eared notebook on my daily commute to London, I found a story which I was excited about, and the chapters started to flow. I am now thrilled to see these scrawls being transformed into a book, by a publisher which has always championed new authors and exciting genres. Abaddon is a perfect fit for Death of a Clone, and I am honoured to be joining their stable of authors.”

Death of a Clone will publish into the UK, US, and Canada in both trade paperback and eBook in 2018. Read on for more about the book and make sure to follow us for more updates about this title!

DEATH OF A CLONE:

The Overseers may call it Hell, but for Leila and the other clones, the mining base on asteroid Mizushima-00109 is the only home they’ve every known. But then, Leila’s sister Lily is murdered, and the Overseers seem less interested in solving the crime than in making their mining quota and returning to Earth.

Leila decides to find the murderer, just like the heroes in her old detective novels would. But Hell is a place of terrible secrets, and a love of cozy mysteries may not be enough to keep Leila from ending up like her sister.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Alex Thomson worked in publishing for twelve years, and had recently changed careers to take up teaching. He wrote Death of a Clone on the train during his daily commute to London, scribbling away in biro in a notebook, surrounded by sweaty commuters. He has two small and lively boys, which explains why trying to write at home is not always a realistic option. His short fiction has been published in the Nocturne anthologies. When not writing, he can be found whiling away the hours in board game cafes or playing the bongos.
