Solaris acquires Vajra Chandrasekera’s award-winning fantasy novel The Saint of Bright Doors for the UK

Against a black background with white stars and the white Solaris logo in the top right corner, two blue circles. In the larger circle, white text "Acquisition Announcement. Vajra Chandrasekera. THE SAINT OF BRIGHT DOORS. June 2024." In the smaller circle, an author photo of R. T. Ester.

Solaris is delighted to announce the acquisition of Vajra Chandrasekera’s The Saint of Bright Doors and Rakesfall in a two-book deal for the UK.

The winner of the Crawford Award and a finalist for the Nebula Award, The Saint of Bright Doors sets the high drama of divine revolutionaries and transcendent cults against the mundane struggles of modern life, resulting in a novel that is revelatory and resonant.

Fetter was raised to kill, honed as a knife to cut down his sainted father. This gave him plenty to talk about in therapy.

He walked among invisible powers: devils and anti-gods that mock the mortal form. He learned a lethal catechism, lost his shadow, and gained a habit for secrecy. After a blood-soaked childhood, Fetter escaped his rural hometown for the big city, and fell into a broader world where divine destinies are a dime a dozen.

Everything in Luriat is more than it seems. Group therapy is recruitment for a revolutionary cadre. Junk email hints at the arrival of a god. Every door is laden with potential, and once closed may never open again. The city is scattered with Bright Doors, looming portals through which a cold wind blows. In this unknowable metropolis, Fetter will discover what kind of man he is, and his discovery will rewrite the world.

UK/BC, excluding Canada, English Language Rights were acquired by Amanda Rutter from Chris Scheina at Tordotcom.

The Saint of Bright Doors will be released on 6th June 2024. Preorder here.

Author Vajra Chandrasekera on the acquisition:

“I’ve long been a fan of the wonderful work that Solaris publishes, and I’m utterly delighted that they will be bringing my books to readers in the UK.”

Acquiring Editor Amanda Rutter:

“I am so thrilled to be publishing Vajra’s work for a UK audience – his books are vital and challenging, and I adored every word when I read them both. New readers can expect stunning prose, vivid characters, and utter originality, and I can’t wait to see what people think!”

Vajra Chandrasekera is from Colombo, Sri Lanka and is online at vajra.me. His debut novel The Saint of Bright Doors was a New York Times Notable Book of 2023, and his short fiction, anthologized in The Apex Book of World SFThe Gollancz Book of South Asian Science Fiction, and The Best Science Fiction of the Year among others, has been nominated for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. His second novel Rakesfall is out in 2024.

A black starred background, blue-purple circles. Acquisition Announcement, O. O. Sangoyomi, MASQUERADE, Summer 2024. The White Solaris Logo is in the top right corner.

Solaris is excited to announce the acquisition of Masquerade by O.O. Sangoyomi, and a second novel, for the UK.

Set in an alternate version of 15th century West Africa, Masquerade is a luscious literary speculative tale of power and freedom inspired by the myth of Persephone.

Òdòdó’s hometown of Timbuktu has been conquered by the the warrior king of Yorùbáland. Already shunned as social pariahs, living conditions for Òdòdó and the other women in her blacksmith guild grow even worse under Yorùbá rule.

Then Òdòdó is abducted. She is whisked across the Sahara to the capital city of Ṣàngótẹ̀, where she is shocked to discover that her kidnapper is none other than the vagrant who had visited her guild just days prior. But now that he is swathed in riches rather than rags, Òdòdó realizes he is not a vagrant at all; he is the warrior king, and he has chosen her to be his wife.

In a sudden change of fortune, Òdòdó soars to the very heights of society. But after a lifetime of subjugation, the power that saturates this world of battle and political savvy becomes too enticing to resist. And as tensions with rival states reveal elaborate schemes and enemies hidden in plain sight, she must re-forge the shaky loyalties of the court to her favor, or risk losing everything—including her life.

UK/BC, excluding Canada, English Language Rights were acquired by David Moore from Chris Scheina at Forge Books.

Masquerade will be released on 4th July 2024.

Author O.O. Sangoyomi on the acquisition:

“I am delighted that my debut novel has found a home at Solaris. I cannot wait to introduce my Medieval West African retelling to the United Kingdom.”

Acquiring Editor David Moore:

“I’m delighted to be bringing this wonderful book to the British market. Masquerade is a visceral, powerful, gorgeously written book that will introduce readers to a world they know too little about.”

O.O. Sangoyomi (she/her) is a Nigerian American author with a penchant for African mythology and history. During a childhood of constantly moving around within the U.S., she found an anchored home in the fictional worlds of books. Sangoyomi is a graduate of Princeton University, where she studied English and African American Studies. Masquerade is her debut novel.

Announcing The Dark Between the Trees by Fiona Barnett!

Solaris is delighted to announce the acquisition of The Dark Between the Trees by Fiona Barnett, a dual timeline tale of English Civil War soldiers and a group of researchers who discover all is not as it seems when they venture into Moresby Wood…

World English Rights were acquired by Michael Rowley from Anne Perry at Ki Agency Ltd.

The Dark Between the Trees will be released on 11 October 2022 in the US and 13 October 2022 in the UK.

We’re thrilled to share the stunning cover with you today, designed by Dominic Forbes:

1643: A small group of Parliamentarian soldiers are ambushed in an isolated part of Northern England. Their only hope for survival is to flee into the nearby Moresby Wood… unwise though that may seem. For Moresby Wood is known to be an unnatural place, the realm of witchcraft and shadows, where the devil is said to go walking by moonlight…

Seventeen men enter the wood. Only two are ever seen again, and the stories they tell of what happened make no sense. Stories of shifting landscapes, of trees that appear and disappear at will… and of something else. Something dark. Something hungry.

Today, five women are headed into Moresby Wood to discover, once and for all, what happened to that unfortunate group of soldiers. They’re led by Dr Alice Christopher, an historian who has devoted her entire academic career to uncovering the secrets of Moresby Wood. Armed with metal detectors, GPS units, mobile phones and the most recent map of the area (which is nearly 50 years old), Dr Christopher’s group enters the wood ready for anything.

Or so they think.

Author Fiona Barnett on the book:

“This story is a mashup of so many of my favourite things: campfire stories, ordinary foot-soldiers in one of the most exciting parts of British history, the things that come slithering out of the darkest part of the woods, and competent women yelling at each other. I’m thrilled that the folks at Rebellion have come with me into the mists of this particular deep forest, and I can’t wait to see The Dark Between the Trees out in the world!”

Acquiring Editor Michael Rowley:

“I love The Dark Between the Trees. It’s a wonderful blend of atmosphere, suspense and pace. The team are all very excited about it, and we’re thrilled to be publishing it.”

Fiona Barnett lives in Edinburgh, but grew up by the New Forest with stories of Roundheads and Cavaliers, and ancient secrets in the heart of the woods. She has podcasted on the British Civil Wars, and her short fiction has appeared in Haunted Voices: An Anthology of Scottish Gothic Storytelling.

Solaris is thrilled to announce the acquisition of When the Sparrow Falls by Neil Sharpson

Solaris are delighted to announce the acquisition of genre-melding debut When the Sparrow Falls by Neil Sharpson, which will be released in summer 2021.

Editor Kate Coe acquired UK/ BC English rights in Sharpson’s new novel from Jennie Goloboy at Donald Maass. When the Sparrow Falls will be published by Tor in the US.

About the book:

In the future, AI are everywhere. They are our employers, our employees, our friends, lovers and even our children. Over half the human race now lives online.

But in the Caspian Republic, the last true human beings have made their stand, and their repressive, one-party state is locked in perpetual cold war with the outside world.

The republic is thrown into chaos when the virulently anti-AI journalist Paulo Xirau is found dead in a bar. At his autopsy, the unthinkable is discovered: Xirau was AI.

Security Agent Nikolai South is given a seemingly mundane task; escorting Xirau’s widow while she visits the Caspian Republic to identify her husband’s remains. He is stunned to discover that the beautiful, reserved, Lily Xirau bears an unearthly resemblance to his wife, who has been dead for thirty years.

As Nikolai and Lily delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Paulo’s death, trying desperately to avoid the attentions of the murderous Bureau of Party Security, a tentative friendship between the two begins to blossom. But when they discover Xirau’s last secret South must choose between his loyalty to his country and his conscience.

Part Cold War spy thriller, part literary science fiction, When the Sparrow Falls is a unique melding of genres, and an exploration of the coming AI revolution, transhumanism, totalitarianism, loss, and the problem of evil.

Author Neil Sharpson on the acquisition:

“I’ve been living in the Caspian Republic (whether as a play, screenplay or novel) for around nine years now and it’s almost impossible to believe that the journey is finally at an end. It’s a story about one man trying to survive in a brutal regime who is given one final chance to make amends to the woman he let down. I’m incredibly grateful to Kate Coe and the team at Rebellion for choosing this book, and to Jennie Goloboy, the best agent any writer could ask for. And most of all to my wife Aoife, who never doubted for a second, even when I did. And while it’s certainly not a place I’d recommend moving to, I sincerely hope people enjoy their time in the Caspian Republic.”

Editor Kate Coe on the book:

“The perfect mash-up of 1984 and John le Carre, with paranoia, betrayal, politics and emotion all weaving a tense story… and with AIs added into the mix! I love the interweaving of mystery, intrigue, technology and personality in Neil’s book, and it goes from light-hearted to heart-aching in equal measures. I’m really pleased to have acquired this for Solaris!”

Neil Sharpson lives in Dublin with his wife and their two children. Having written for theatre since his teens, Neil transitioned to writing novels in 2017, adapting his own play The Caspian Sea into When the Sparrow Falls. A huge fan of animation, Neil writes Unshaved Mouse, a comedic review blog mostly focusing on animated film and comic book movies. He is a graduate of the Abbey Theatre’s New Playwright’s Programme, and was shortlisted for the Maguire International Playwrighting Award.
