OUT NOW: Saint Death’s Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney!

We’re overjoyed to be wishing Saint Death’s Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney a very happy book birthday!

For fans of Gideon the Ninth and Hogfather, C.S.E. Cooney’s whimsical, tender and just-a-little-bit-bonkers debut is an exuberant and heartwarming love letter to life, death, and everything inbetween.

Nothing complicates life like Death.

Lanie Stones, the daughter of the Royal Assassin and Chief Executioner of Liriat, has never led a normal life. Born with a gift for necromancy and a literal allergy to violence, she was raised in isolation in the family’s crumbling mansion by her oldest friend, the ancient revenant Goody Graves.

When her parents are murdered, it falls on Lanie and her cheerfully psychotic sister Nita to settle their extensive debts or lose their ancestral home—and Goody with it. Appeals to Liriat’s ruler to protect them fall on indifferent ears… until she, too, is murdered, throwing the nation’s future into doubt.

Hunted by Liriat’s enemies, hounded by her family’s creditors and terrorised by the ghost of her great-grandfather, Lanie will need more than luck to get through the next few months—but when the goddess of Death is on your side, anything is possible.

“Saint Death’s Daughter is a tumultuous, swaggering, cackling story, a gorgeous citrus orchard with bones for roots. Miscellaneous Stones’ journey into adulthood and power, sorting knowledge from wisdom and vengeance from justice, has an ocean’s breadth and depth, its storms and sparkles and salt. Soaring with love and absolutely fizzing with tenderness and joy–I have never read anything so utterly alive.” — Amal El-Mohtar

Solaris to publish cyberpunk mosaic novel by Lavanya Lakshminarayan

Solaris is delighted to announce the acquisition of The Ten-Percent Thief by Lavanya Lakshminarayan, a sci-fi novel of corporate greed and resistance with an Indian twist, for publication in Spring 2023.

In a future where the world’s nations have collapsed and Bangalore has been rebranded as Apex City, the elite Virtuals and downtrodden Analogs live on either side of an electric shield that strikes through the city’s centre. Technology is the key to power, so when Analog thief Nāyaka steals a genetically-modified jacaranda bud, and plants it on the Analog side of the city, the tree that blossoms becomes a clarion call for rebellion.

World All Languages Rights, excluding Asia, and French and Italian languages, were acquired by David Moore from Cameron McClure at the Donald Maas Literary Agency.

Author Lavanya Lakshminarayan on the acquisition:

“This is a “pinch me, I must be dreaming” moment! I’ve always admired Rebellion Publishing’s list, and I’m thrilled to have found a place on it, in the company of so many wonderful writers whose work I love and cherish.

The Ten-Percent Thief is my debut novel, and it’s a mosaic woven through the streets of India in the near future. It’s part-satirical, part-hopeful, all cyberpunk and revolution, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it.

I’m super grateful to David Moore and Cameron McClure for giving my words a home, and for letting my imaginings thrive unfettered. They’ve travelled with me on journeys into the unknown, and transformed my dreams into the pages of The Ten-Percent Thief. I can’t wait for you to step into this future we’ve built, and I’m excited about the many worlds we’re shaping beyond!”

Acquiring Editor David Moore:

“The Ten Percent Thief is a book for our time, cyberpunk revisited for the 2020s. It’s a scathing satire on social media, on the gig economy, on the inequalities of our society and the lies it tells to preserve them. And it’s fun, too, and often funny. I’m hugely looking forward to working with Lavanya on this.”

Lavanya Lakshminarayan lives between Bangalore and Hyderabad, and grew up in the former. She spent ten years as a game designer, building worlds and crafting narratives for massive successes like FarmVille and Mafia Wars. She’s travelled across the world, but loves coming home to her two dogs and the legion of stray cats she cares for. She can be found on Instagram at @lavanya.ln and Twitter at @lavanya_ln.

Announcing The Dark Between the Trees by Fiona Barnett!

Solaris is delighted to announce the acquisition of The Dark Between the Trees by Fiona Barnett, a dual timeline tale of English Civil War soldiers and a group of researchers who discover all is not as it seems when they venture into Moresby Wood…

World English Rights were acquired by Michael Rowley from Anne Perry at Ki Agency Ltd.

The Dark Between the Trees will be released on 11 October 2022 in the US and 13 October 2022 in the UK.

We’re thrilled to share the stunning cover with you today, designed by Dominic Forbes:

1643: A small group of Parliamentarian soldiers are ambushed in an isolated part of Northern England. Their only hope for survival is to flee into the nearby Moresby Wood… unwise though that may seem. For Moresby Wood is known to be an unnatural place, the realm of witchcraft and shadows, where the devil is said to go walking by moonlight…

Seventeen men enter the wood. Only two are ever seen again, and the stories they tell of what happened make no sense. Stories of shifting landscapes, of trees that appear and disappear at will… and of something else. Something dark. Something hungry.

Today, five women are headed into Moresby Wood to discover, once and for all, what happened to that unfortunate group of soldiers. They’re led by Dr Alice Christopher, an historian who has devoted her entire academic career to uncovering the secrets of Moresby Wood. Armed with metal detectors, GPS units, mobile phones and the most recent map of the area (which is nearly 50 years old), Dr Christopher’s group enters the wood ready for anything.

Or so they think.

Author Fiona Barnett on the book:

“This story is a mashup of so many of my favourite things: campfire stories, ordinary foot-soldiers in one of the most exciting parts of British history, the things that come slithering out of the darkest part of the woods, and competent women yelling at each other. I’m thrilled that the folks at Rebellion have come with me into the mists of this particular deep forest, and I can’t wait to see The Dark Between the Trees out in the world!”

Acquiring Editor Michael Rowley:

“I love The Dark Between the Trees. It’s a wonderful blend of atmosphere, suspense and pace. The team are all very excited about it, and we’re thrilled to be publishing it.”

Fiona Barnett lives in Edinburgh, but grew up by the New Forest with stories of Roundheads and Cavaliers, and ancient secrets in the heart of the woods. She has podcasted on the British Civil Wars, and her short fiction has appeared in Haunted Voices: An Anthology of Scottish Gothic Storytelling.
