Solaris to publish rising horror star Isabel Cañas for the UK

Solaris are thrilled to announce the acquisition of The Hacienda and Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas for the UK.

Cañas’s luscious Gothic debut, The Hacienda, follows newlywed Beatriz as she accompanies her husband to his countryside estate, Hacienda San Isidro. She tries to ignore the rumours surrounding the death of the wife who preceded her, but something is wrong with the hacienda and young priest Padre Andrés is her only ally against its malevolent presence.

In Vampires of El Norte Cañas returns to 19th century Mexico, where vampires and vaqueros face off on the Texas-Mexico border in a supernatural tale of two friends reunited after a tragedy that will satisfy fans of Netflix’s Midnight Mass.

The Hacienda will be released in October 2023, with Vampires of El Norte following in October 2024. English Language UK/BC Rights were acquired by Amy Borsuk from Tawanna Sullivan at Berkley, PRH.

Author Isabel Cañas on the acquisition:

“I am utterly thrilled that The Hacienda and Vampires of El Norte are making their way across the pond! The UK was my home for many years–I spent five years studying at the Universities of St Andrews and Edinburgh and as many again flying back and forth to London to visit my now-husband and beloved friends. I could not be more delighted to call it home once more, this time in the care of the brilliant Amy Borsuk and the whole Solaris team.”

Acquiring Editor Amy Borsuk:

“I’m so excited to be bringing Isabel’s fantastic horror books to the UK! Her haunted house and vampire stories set in 19th century Mexico are thrilling, refreshing and evocative. The way she weaves magic, hauntings, and monstrous vampires into the realities of Mexican history is unlike any other horror out there!”

Revealing the paperback cover for The Dark Between the Trees by Fiona Barnett!

We’re delighted to bring our #HalfwaytoHalloween celebration to an end by revealing the gorgeous cover for the paperback edition of The Dark Between the Trees by Fiona Barnett!

Annihilation meets The Descent in this dual timeline folk horror debut. If you go down to the woods today, you’ll be sure of a big surprise.

The Dark Between the Trees will be out in paperback this October. Cover by Dominic Forbes.

1643: A small group of Parliamentarian soldiers are ambushed in an isolated part of Northern England. Their only hope for survival is to flee into the nearby Moresby Wood… unwise though that may seem. For Moresby Wood is known to be an unnatural place, the realm of witchcraft and shadows, where the devil is said to go walking by moonlight…

Seventeen men enter the wood. Only two are ever seen again, and the stories they tell of what happened make no sense. Stories of shifting landscapes, of trees that appear and disappear at will… and of something else. Something dark. Something hungry.

Today, five women are headed into Moresby Wood to discover, once and for all, what happened to that unfortunate group of soldiers. Led by Dr Alice Christopher, an historian who has devoted her entire academic career to uncovering the secrets of Moresby Wood. Armed with metal detectors, GPS units, mobile phones and the most recent map of the area (which is nearly 50 years old), Dr Christopher’s group enters the wood ready for anything.

Or so they think.

“A memorable, spooky tale.” — The Guardian

“Folk horror of the most classic kind, refreshed for the new century.” — Esquire

“An unsettling and compelling folk horror.” — SFX

“An impressive debut” — The FT

“Surreal and haunting” — Booklist

OUT NOW: The Iron Children by Rebecca Fraimow

We’re wishing a very Happy Book Birthday to the first of our Solaris Satellites novellas, The Iron Children by Rebecca Fraimow!

Asher has been training her entire life to become a Sor-Commander. One day, she’ll give her soul to the gilded, mechanical body of the Sor and become a commander to a whole battalion of Dedicates. These soldiers, human bodies encased in exoskeletons, with extra arms, and telepathic subordination to the Sor-Commanders, are the only thing that’s kept the much larger Levastani army of conquest at bay for decades.

But while on a training journey, Asher and her party are attacked, and her commander is incapacitated, leaving her alone to lead the unit across a bitterly cold, unstable mountain. Worse, one of the Dedicates is not what they seem: a spy for the enemy, with their own reasons to hate their mechanical body and the people who put them in it.

To get off the mountain alive, Asher and her unit will need to decide how much they’re willing to sacrifice — and what for.

“I would follow Asher into any battle, no matter how uncomfortable she would personally feel about that fact.” — Freya Marske, author of The Last Binding Trilogy

“Come for the clockwork battle nuns and fascinating worldbuilding, stay for a profound, moving conclusion that goes straight for the soul.” — Ren Hutchings, author of Under Fortunate Stars

“A brilliant science fantasy adventure, perfect for fans of Murderbot and Becky Chambers.” — Zen Cho, author of Black Water Sister
