Europe at Midnight wins the Arthur C Clarke Award!

Dave Hutchinson’s Europe at Midnight has won the 2016 Arthur C Clarke Award.

Hutchinson’s beautifully crafted and timely tale of espionage and hidden realities in a broken near-future Europe wins the Award in his historic 30th year. 

The achievement is all the more impressive for Europe at Midnight being a companion novel- its forerunner, Europe in Autumn, was also shortlisted for the Arthur C Clarke Award in 2015, when it lost out to Emily St John Mandel’s Station Eleven. 

Europe at Midnight is the first time a novel from Solaris, Rebellion Publishing’s cutting edge science fiction and fantasy imprint, has won the award.

About the Fractured Europe Sequence

Europe is crumbling. The Xian Flu pandemic and ongoing economic crises have fractured the European Union. The borderless Continent of the Schengen Agreement is a distant memory, and new nations are springing up everywhere, some literally overnight.

When Rudi, a chef from Krakow, is recruited by the shadowy organisation “Les Coureurs des Bois,” and schooled in espionage, he finds himself pulled into a world where kidnapping, double-crosses and a constantly re-drawn map are the norm.

But underneath his daily round of plot and counter plot, behind the conflicting territories, another entirely different Europe, a hidden continent existing alongside our own, might be pulling the strings.

But what is the Community, and how does its secret history affect Europe’s present?

Beginning with Europe in Autumn (2014), and continuing with Europe at Midnight (2015) and the soon to be published Europe in Winter (2017), the Fractured Europe Sequence is a near-future science fiction thriller in the finest traditions of the genre: exciting, prescient, and brilliant. 

About the author

Dave Hutchinson was born in Sheffield. After reading American Studies at the University of Nottingham, he became a journalist. He’s the author of five collections of short stories and one novel, and his novella The Push was shortlisted for the 2010 BSFA award for short fiction. Europe in Autumn, the first book in his Fractured Europe Sequence, was nominated for the Arthur C Clarke Award in 2015, as was its sequel, Europe at Midnight, in 2016. He lives in north London with his wife and several cats.

Europe at Midnight makes the Not the Booker 2016 longlist

More big news for Dave Hutchinson’s Europe at Midnight: the Clarke Award nominated novel has now been picked up for The Guardian’s Not the Booker 2016 longlist.

Not bad, eh? The Fractured Europe sequence goes from strength to strength, and we’re delighted to see national press giving Hutchinson the attention he deserves.

For Europe at Midnight to make the shortlist, it needs votes – votes that you can give it by heading to the Guardian website and leaving the title of the book and a short review in the comments section.

Europe At Midnight named 2016 Campbell Memorial Award finalist

Dave Hutchinson’s Europe At Midnight has been named as a finalist for the John W. Campbell Memorial Award – making this the second major award (alongside the recent Clarke Award nod) that Hutchinson has been shortlisted for two years running.

Europe At Midnight is in exalted company on the Campbell Memorial Award shortlist, joining the likes of Luna: New Moon by Ian McDonald, Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson and The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi in the running for the award.

It’s another well-deserved piece of recognition for a series that just keeps getting better. Don’t forget the next installment in the Fractured Europe sequence, Europe In Winter, is available for preorder from the Rebellion store right now.

Europe At Midnight makes Arthur C Clarke Award shortlist!

Dave Hutchinson’s Europe At Midnight has been shortlisted for the 2016 Arthur C Clarke Award.

It’s the second year running Dave has been shortlisted for the award, with Europe In Autumn making the list in 2015. It’s quite an achievement, and makes Dave a member of a very elite club of authors who have made the list twice. To have done it two years in a row – well, that’s nothing short of incredible. 

We’re obviously delighted for Dave, and our fingers are firmly crossed for him. Of course, if he somehow doesn’t win (and he really, really should, for Europe At Midnight is bloody marvellous) then there’s always Europe In Winter for 2017.

Trust us, these books just keep getting better…

We’ve known all along that Dave Hutchinson is a genius, and it seems that the rest of the world is catching up as Europe At Midnight makes the shortlist for the BSFA Awards. Hooray!

It’s well deserved recognition for what we think was one of the best books published in 2015, and we’re crossing our fingers that Dave takes the award home.

Happy publication day Europe At Midnight!

Dave Hutchinson’s Europe At Midnight, the sublime sequel to smash-hit, multi-award nominated Europe At Autumn, is out today, and we are officially very excited.

The second book in the Fractured Europe sequence unfolds the world of the first book and opens it out like a map. It’s about as sophisticated and beautifully written a science fiction novel as you’re likely to read this (or any other) year – but don’t take our word for it.

Dave Hutchinson signs Europe At Midnight!

Europe In Autumn is a blindingly brilliant book. We know it, you know it, and everyone from the Clarke Awards to The Guardian know it.

And on 5 November, Dave Hutchinson returns to the world of the Community with Europe At Midnight, the superb sequel that will blow your mind all over again.

To celebrate, Dave is heading to Forbidden Planet in London’s West End to sign copies of the new book, talk the toot and generally be brilliant.

Five things: Dave Hutchinson on thrillers

Dave Hutchinson’s magnificent Europe In Autumn is up for yet another award this weekend – the prestigious John W Campbells Award for best science fiction novel of the year – and to celebrate we asked the author to talk us through his five favourite thrillers.

1 Kolymsky Heights by Lionel Davidson

Lionel Davidson was a terrific writer and this, his final novel, is his best, a cracking late Cold War thriller about an agent infiltrating a top-secret Siberian laboratory to retrieve a Great Secret. More than anything else, it’s a wonderful romp.

2 The Small Back Room by Nigel Balchin

Published in 1943, The Small Back Room is set in the world of wartime scientific research. Its protagonist, Sammy Rice, is profoundly damaged, alcoholic, a serial avoider of responsibility forced into an act of bravery. One of the great joys of the book is its portrayal of bureaucracy and office politics, and it’s beautifully-written.

3 Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household

The (unnamed) narrator sets out to see if he can stalk and prepare to shoot the (unnamed) head of state of a foreign nation. Supposedly interested only in the hunt itself, he doesn’t pull the trigger, but he’s caught by the dictator’s guards, escapes, and makes his way back to England, where he engages in a game of cat and mouse with foreign agents. Not a long novel, but an incredibly rich one.

4 Funeral In Berlin by Len Deighton

The IPCRESS File seems to get the most attention, but for my money this is Deighton’s best novel, a ferociously cool fable set in a Europe still bearing the scars and secrets of the recent War and still freshly-divided by the Berlin Wall. As always with Deighton, the writing is a joy.

5 Night Soldiers by Alan Furst

Furst’s novels form a huge mosaic centered around what has been called ‘the midnight of the century,’ the outbreak of the Second World War. This one, though, encompasses the whole period of the war, following Bulgarian Khristo Stoianev from his recruitment into the NKVD – the forerunner to the KGB – in the 1930s. It’s a wonderful piece of writing, detailed and calm and humane.
