Cover reveal: The House of Styx by Derek Künsken

We are thrilled to share the cover for The House of Styx, the first in a new blockbuster science fiction series by Derek Künsken, publishing in eBook August 2020 and hardback April 2021.

Life can exist anywhere. And anywhere there is life, there is home.

In the swirling clouds of Venus, the families of la colonie live on floating plant-like trawlers, salvaging what they can in the fierce acid rain and crackling storms. Outside is dangerous, but humankind’s hold on the planet is fragile and they spend most of their days simply surviving.

But Venus carries its own secrets, too. In the depths, there is a wind that shouldn’t exist.

And the House of Styx wants to harness it.

Solaris is thrilled to announce the acquisition of When the Sparrow Falls by Neil Sharpson

Solaris are delighted to announce the acquisition of genre-melding debut When the Sparrow Falls by Neil Sharpson, which will be released in summer 2021.

Editor Kate Coe acquired UK/ BC English rights in Sharpson’s new novel from Jennie Goloboy at Donald Maass. When the Sparrow Falls will be published by Tor in the US.

About the book:

In the future, AI are everywhere. They are our employers, our employees, our friends, lovers and even our children. Over half the human race now lives online.

But in the Caspian Republic, the last true human beings have made their stand, and their repressive, one-party state is locked in perpetual cold war with the outside world.

The republic is thrown into chaos when the virulently anti-AI journalist Paulo Xirau is found dead in a bar. At his autopsy, the unthinkable is discovered: Xirau was AI.

Security Agent Nikolai South is given a seemingly mundane task; escorting Xirau’s widow while she visits the Caspian Republic to identify her husband’s remains. He is stunned to discover that the beautiful, reserved, Lily Xirau bears an unearthly resemblance to his wife, who has been dead for thirty years.

As Nikolai and Lily delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Paulo’s death, trying desperately to avoid the attentions of the murderous Bureau of Party Security, a tentative friendship between the two begins to blossom. But when they discover Xirau’s last secret South must choose between his loyalty to his country and his conscience.

Part Cold War spy thriller, part literary science fiction, When the Sparrow Falls is a unique melding of genres, and an exploration of the coming AI revolution, transhumanism, totalitarianism, loss, and the problem of evil.

Author Neil Sharpson on the acquisition:

“I’ve been living in the Caspian Republic (whether as a play, screenplay or novel) for around nine years now and it’s almost impossible to believe that the journey is finally at an end. It’s a story about one man trying to survive in a brutal regime who is given one final chance to make amends to the woman he let down. I’m incredibly grateful to Kate Coe and the team at Rebellion for choosing this book, and to Jennie Goloboy, the best agent any writer could ask for. And most of all to my wife Aoife, who never doubted for a second, even when I did. And while it’s certainly not a place I’d recommend moving to, I sincerely hope people enjoy their time in the Caspian Republic.”

Editor Kate Coe on the book:

“The perfect mash-up of 1984 and John le Carre, with paranoia, betrayal, politics and emotion all weaving a tense story… and with AIs added into the mix! I love the interweaving of mystery, intrigue, technology and personality in Neil’s book, and it goes from light-hearted to heart-aching in equal measures. I’m really pleased to have acquired this for Solaris!”

Neil Sharpson lives in Dublin with his wife and their two children. Having written for theatre since his teens, Neil transitioned to writing novels in 2017, adapting his own play The Caspian Sea into When the Sparrow Falls. A huge fan of animation, Neil writes Unshaved Mouse, a comedic review blog mostly focusing on animated film and comic book movies. He is a graduate of the Abbey Theatre’s New Playwright’s Programme, and was shortlisted for the Maguire International Playwrighting Award.

Solaris announces the acquisition of Seven Deaths of an Empire, a grimdark fantasy by G. R. Matthews

Solaris is delighted to announce the acquisition of Seven Deaths of an Empire by G. R. Matthews, coming summer 2021.

Editor Kate Coe acquired World English rights in Matthews’ new novel from Jamie Cowan at The Ampersand Agency.

About the book:

The Emperor is dead. Long live the Empire.

General Bordan has a lifetime of duty and sacrifice behind him in the service of the Empire. But with rebellion brewing in the countryside, and assassins, thieves and politicians vying for power in the city, it is all Bordan can do to protect the heir to the throne.

Apprentice Magician Kyron is assigned to the late Emperor’s honour guard escorting his body on the long road back to the capital. Mistrusted and feared by his own people, even a magician’s power may fail when enemies emerge from the forests, for whoever is in control of the Emperor’s body, controls the succession.

Seven lives and seven deaths to seal the fate of the Empire.

Editor Kate Coe on the acquisition:

“I was sent this book as part of our #ShootYourShot open pitches, and it blew me away from the first page – a mix of historical fantasy and politics, with characters you want to succeed and a nasty way of turning everything around just when you think it’s going to go right; a perfect grimdark for when you just need your faith in everything shattered.”

Author bio

G. R. Matthews began reading in the cot. His mother, at her wits end with the constant noise and unceasing activity, would plop him down on the soft mattress with an encyclopaedia full of pictures then quietly slip from the room. Growing up, he spent Sunday afternoons on the sofa watching westerns and Bond movies after suffering the dual horror of the sounds of ABBA and the hoover (Vacuum cleaner) drifting up the stairs to wake him in the morning. When not watching the six-gun heroes or spies being out-acted by their own eyebrows he devoured books like a hungry wolf in the dead of winter. Beginning with Patrick Moore and Arthur C Clarke he soon moved on to Isaac Asimov. However, one wet afternoon in a book shop in his hometown, not far from the standing stones of Avebury, he picked up the Pawn of Prophecy and started to read – and soon Sci-Fi gave way to Fantasy.

You can follow him on twitter @G_R_Matthews or visit his website at www.grmatthews.com.

Cover reveal: Grave Secrets by Alice James

We are thrilled to share the cover for Grave Secrets, the laugh-out-loud debut by Alice James, publishing in September 2020. Grave Secrets blends urban fantasy and cosy crime with the perfect addition of a kick-ass heroine.

“Heads up to all fans of True Blood and Buffy, our new favourite heroine is here, she’s a necromancer, and she’s kind of a hot mess!” – NetGalley review

“A fun filled, laugh out loud page turner.” – NetGalley review

“A thrilling five-star read.” – NetGalley review

An adventure with zombies. And vampires. And romance. And croquet.

Toni Windsor is trying to live a quiet life in the green and pleasant county of Staffordshire. She’d love to finally master the rules of croquet, acquire a decent boyfriend and make some commission as an estate agent. All that might have to wait, though, because there are zombies rising from their graves, vampires sneaking out of their coffins and a murder to solve. It’s all made rather more complicated by the fact that she’s the one raising all the zombies – oh, and she’s dating one of the vampires. It can’t be the best decision she’s ever made, but he’s so pretty. Really, what’s a girl meant to do?

Alice James was born in Staffordshire, where she grew up reading novels and spending a lot of time with sheep. She was lucky enough to have a mother who was addicted to science fiction and a father who was fond of long country walks, so she grew up with her head in the stars and her feet on the ground. After studying maths at university and training to be a Cobol programmer (!), she began writing novels to get the weird people in her head to go somewhere else. She now lives in Oxfordshire with a fine selection of cats, fulfilling her teenage gothic fantasies by moving into a converted chapel with an ancient spiral staircase—and gravestones in the garden. Her go-to comfort dish is a big plate of dumplings, her number one cocktail is a Manhattan and her favourite polygon is a triangle, though she has a soft spot for concave rhomboids. Solaris is excited to announce the acquisition of Monkey Around by Jadie Jang

Solaris is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Monkey Around by Jadie Jang, publishing in 2021.

Editor Kate Coe acquired World English rights in Jang’s new novel from Amanda Leuck at Spencerhill Associates.

About the book:

Who is Maya McQueen?

The San Francisco Bay Area, a nexus of human and supernatural energy that draws people—and creatures—from hundreds of cultures all over the world.

At the center of this nexus is barista, activist, and were-monkey, Maya McQueen, who doesn’t know what kind of creature she is, or where she comes from. Her home is being rocked by the occupation of Oakland’s civic center by Occupy Wall Street activists in the human world, and by the serial murders of shapeshifters who have had their souls sucked out, on the supernatural side.

Maya discovers that the soul-sucking murderer may be connected somehow to a creature like her. This is her first, ever, clue to her own origins, and she jumps into the mystery with both feet.  Helping her is werejaguar and IT medicine man Tez Varela, who manages the last nagual practice in San Francisco’s rapidly gentrifying Mission district, and whose reappearance in Maya’s life has landed her in the middle of a gang war.  Also helping—or is it stalking?—her is Todd Wakahisa, a fellow activist and a kitsune whose penchant for pranks rivals even hers.

For the first time in Maya’s life, she’s faced with a creature she may not have the strength to defeat. She’ll have to up her game, rely on others, and betray those closest to her to come out on top. But what she doesn’t know, just might kill her.

Author Jadie Jang on the acquisition:

“Everyone knows the Brits come second in horrible, right wing, would-be-dictator heads of state, but first in fantasy novels, so I’m super flattered and excited to see my baby’s debut with Rebellion! Seriously, though, I couldn’t think of a better home for Monkey Around than the publisher of Yoon Ha Lee and Silvia Moreno Garcia. Thanks for taking us on!”

Editor Kate Coe had this to say:

“Female Monkey King of San Francisco. Do I need to say any more? I loved this action-packed story as soon as I opened the first page, and that’s even without getting into the murder mystery, supernatural chaos, and sheer fun that Jadie provides. Really looking forward to bringing this page-turner to readers!”

Author bio

Claire Light (writing as Jadie Jang) is almost as organizy as her characters. She started a magazine (Hyphen) and an arts festival (APAture) with a cast of Asian Pacific Americans even more magical, if less supernatural, than the ones she writes about. She also got an MFA, went to Clarion West, and compromised between the two by publishing a collection of “literary” sci-fi short stories (Slightly Behind and to the Left) that maybe 100 people read. After wrangling arts and social justice nonprofits for 17 years, her already autoimmune-disease-addled body threw a seven-year-long tantrum, leading our then-house-bound heroine into an urban fantasy addiction. A few years, and a dozen Euro-centric-mythology-dominated urban fantasy series later, Claire sat up and said “I can do this!” and Jadie Jang, the part of her brain that writes snarky-fun genre romps, was born. She posts about monkeys every Monday under @seelight on Twitter.

Solaris is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Assassin’s Orbit by John Appel

Solaris is excited to share the news of the acquisition of Assassin’s Orbit by John Appel, coming summer 2021.

Editor Kate Coe acquired World English rights in Appel’s new novel from Hannah Bowman at Liza Dawson Associates.

John Appel’s Assassin’s Orbit: pitched as Battlestar Galactica meets Golden Girls, in which a private investigator, spy, security chief, and starship captain (all women of middle age and older) investigate a mass murder on a space station which uncovers a conspiracy to release a technological threat humanity thought they had escaped in their long-ago exile from Lost Earth.

Author John Appel on the acquisition:

“I’m thrilled to be working with the Rebellion team to bring the universe and characters of Assassin’s Orbit to life. It’s a story in the grand tradition of adventurous science fiction, with a cast that’s anything but the usual suspects – all women, and all over 40. These are women who’ve been there, done that, and don’t have time for fools. Assassin’s Orbit is about overcoming incredible obstacles and defying the odds, not singly, but together.”

Editor Kate Coe had this to say:

“When I was sent Assassin’s Orbit, it was described as Golden Girls meets The Expanse with a side of Babylon Five – and it’s all of that and more. It combines the very best of a murder mystery and political thriller with an added dose of intrigue, and tops it off with amazing characters and worldbuilding: very simply, it’s a book I couldn’t stop reading!”

Author bio

John Appel volunteered to jump out of planes before he’d ever been in a plane; his friends and family say this sums up his approach to life pretty well. He writes science fiction and fantasy and the occasional tabletop RPG adventure. A lifelong Marylander, he lives in the Baltimore suburbs with his wife and children. He masquerades as a technology risk manager to pay the bills after two decades as an information security pro. When not writing, rolling dice, or keeping the bad guys at bay, he enjoys rum and swords, but not both at the same time. John is a graduate of the Viable Paradise writing workshop.

We are delighted to reveal the cover for the action-packed techno-thriller The Chimera Code by Wayne Santos, available in eBook from July 2020 and paperback in November 2020.

“A full-throttle magical cyberpunk superhero thriller.” – Peter McLean

“Stylish, bad-ass, and above all immersive… Every line sings of holographs and sprawling megapolis, every sentence is an offering to cyberpunk gods.” – Edgar Cantero

Everything’s for hire – even magic.

If you need something done, Cloke’s one of the best; a mercenary with some unusual talents and an attitude to match. But when she’s hired by a virtual construct to destroy the other copies of himself, and the down payment is a new magical skill, she knows this job is going to be a league harder than anything she’s ever done.

An action-packed techno-thriller with a side of magical realism from a bold new voice in genre fiction.

The Chimera Code is book one of the WitchWare series.

He now lives in Canada, in Hamilton, ON with his wife. When he’s not writing, he is likely to be found reading, playing video games, watching anime, or trying to calm his cat down.

Solaris is excited to announce the acquisition of Saint Death’s Daughter by C. S. E. Cooney

Solaris are delighted to announce the acquisition of Saint Death’s Daughter by World Fantasy Award winner C. S. E. Cooney, coming spring 2022.

The first in a projected series by C. S. E. Cooney’s, Saint Death’s Daughter introduces Miscellaneous “Lanie” Stones, a daughter of royal assassins and necromancer whose allergy to violence is posing significant challenges to her life and career.

Editor Kate Coe acquired World English rights in Cooney’s new novel from Markus Hoffmann at Regal Hoffmann & Associates.

About the book:

Life gets complicated when Death gets involved.

To be born into a family of royal assassins pretty much guarantees that your childhood is going to be, well, let’s say, rather unusual. Especially if you’ve also been born with a vicious allergy to all forms of violence and bloodshed.

Such is the fate of Miscellaneous “Lanie” Stones, for whom going into the family business is entirely out of the question. No wonder that, despite Lanie’s uncanny affinity for death magic, she’s considered a failure by her bloodthirsty older sister, and the ghost of her angry late grandfather.

To make matters worse, family debt looms – a debt that will have to be paid sooner rather than later if Lanie and her sister are to retain ownership of the ancestral seat, Stones Manor.

But big changes are afoot when Lanie finds herself courted and threatened by powerful parties who would love to use her worryingly intimate relationship with the goddess of death for their own nefarious ends. But the goddess has other plans for Lanie…

Author C. S. E. Cooney on the acquisition:

I’m so happy—so perfectly delighted!—that what started out as a froofy necromancer NaNoWriMo novel a decade ago (and which became, over one billion drafts, a froofy necromancer grown-up writer novel) is in the hands of Rebellion. What a dreamboat of a team! I loved them the minute they said they liked my footnotes and sketched me a skeleton mouse. I can’t wait for whatever comes next!

Editor Kate Coe had this to say:

“I absolutely adore Saint Death’s Daughter; picture Gideon the Ninth meeting Jonathan Strange, with a side dose of undead puppies, skeletal mice, dangerous politics and fascinating characters! It’s a real joy to travel with Lanie as she grows, learns, messes up, creates terrifying necromantic creatures and falls in love, and I can’t wait to bring this book to readers.

P.s. It has wonderful footnotes.”

Author bio

C. S. E. Cooney is the author of World Fantasy Award-winning Bone Swans: Stories. Her short novel The Twice-Drowned Saint is included in Mythic Delirium’s anthology The Sinister Quartet. Other work includes Tor.com novella Desdemona and the Deep, and a poetry collection: How to Flirt in Faerieland and Other Wild Rhymes, which features her Rhysling Award-winning “The Sea King’s Second Bride.” Her short fiction and poetry can be found in Jonathan Strahan’s anthology Dragons, Ellen Datlow’s Mad Hatters and March Hares: All-New Stories from the World of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, Rich Horton’s Year’s Best Science Fiction and Fantasy, and elsewhere.
