Solaris is excited to announce the acquisition of Saint Death’s Daughter by C. S. E. Cooney

Solaris are delighted to announce the acquisition of Saint Death’s Daughter by World Fantasy Award winner C. S. E. Cooney, coming spring 2022.

The first in a projected series by C. S. E. Cooney’s, Saint Death’s Daughter introduces Miscellaneous “Lanie” Stones, a daughter of royal assassins and necromancer whose allergy to violence is posing significant challenges to her life and career.

Editor Kate Coe acquired World English rights in Cooney’s new novel from Markus Hoffmann at Regal Hoffmann & Associates.

About the book:

Life gets complicated when Death gets involved.

To be born into a family of royal assassins pretty much guarantees that your childhood is going to be, well, let’s say, rather unusual. Especially if you’ve also been born with a vicious allergy to all forms of violence and bloodshed.

Such is the fate of Miscellaneous “Lanie” Stones, for whom going into the family business is entirely out of the question. No wonder that, despite Lanie’s uncanny affinity for death magic, she’s considered a failure by her bloodthirsty older sister, and the ghost of her angry late grandfather.

To make matters worse, family debt looms – a debt that will have to be paid sooner rather than later if Lanie and her sister are to retain ownership of the ancestral seat, Stones Manor.

But big changes are afoot when Lanie finds herself courted and threatened by powerful parties who would love to use her worryingly intimate relationship with the goddess of death for their own nefarious ends. But the goddess has other plans for Lanie…

Author C. S. E. Cooney on the acquisition:

I’m so happy—so perfectly delighted!—that what started out as a froofy necromancer NaNoWriMo novel a decade ago (and which became, over one billion drafts, a froofy necromancer grown-up writer novel) is in the hands of Rebellion. What a dreamboat of a team! I loved them the minute they said they liked my footnotes and sketched me a skeleton mouse. I can’t wait for whatever comes next!

Editor Kate Coe had this to say:

“I absolutely adore Saint Death’s Daughter; picture Gideon the Ninth meeting Jonathan Strange, with a side dose of undead puppies, skeletal mice, dangerous politics and fascinating characters! It’s a real joy to travel with Lanie as she grows, learns, messes up, creates terrifying necromantic creatures and falls in love, and I can’t wait to bring this book to readers.

P.s. It has wonderful footnotes.”
