Solaris announces the acquisition of Seven Deaths of an Empire, a grimdark fantasy by G. R. Matthews

Solaris is delighted to announce the acquisition of Seven Deaths of an Empire by G. R. Matthews, coming summer 2021.

Editor Kate Coe acquired World English rights in Matthews’ new novel from Jamie Cowan at The Ampersand Agency.

About the book:

The Emperor is dead. Long live the Empire.

Author bio

G. R. Matthews began reading in the cot. His mother, at her wits end with the constant noise and unceasing activity, would plop him down on the soft mattress with an encyclopaedia full of pictures then quietly slip from the room. Growing up, he spent Sunday afternoons on the sofa watching westerns and Bond movies after suffering the dual horror of the sounds of ABBA and the hoover (Vacuum cleaner) drifting up the stairs to wake him in the morning. When not watching the six-gun heroes or spies being out-acted by their own eyebrows he devoured books like a hungry wolf in the dead of winter. Beginning with Patrick Moore and Arthur C Clarke he soon moved on to Isaac Asimov. However, one wet afternoon in a book shop in his hometown, not far from the standing stones of Avebury, he picked up the Pawn of Prophecy and started to read – and soon Sci-Fi gave way to Fantasy.

Alice James was born in Staffordshire, where she grew up reading novels and spending a lot of time with sheep. She was lucky enough to have a mother who was addicted to science fiction and a father who was fond of long country walks, so she grew up with her head in the stars and her feet on the ground. After studying maths at university and training to be a Cobol programmer (!), she began writing novels to get the weird people in her head to go somewhere else. She now lives in Oxfordshire with a fine selection of cats, fulfilling her teenage gothic fantasies by moving into a converted chapel with an ancient spiral staircase—and gravestones in the garden. Her go-to comfort dish is a big plate of dumplings, her number one cocktail is a Manhattan and her favourite polygon is a triangle, though she has a soft spot for concave rhomboids. Solaris is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Monkey Around by Jadie Jang, publishing in 2021.

Author bio

Claire Light (writing as Jadie Jang) is almost as organizy as her characters. She started a magazine (Hyphen) and an arts festival (APAture) with a cast of Asian Pacific Americans even more magical, if less supernatural, than the ones she writes about. She also got an MFA, went to Clarion West, and compromised between the two by publishing a collection of “literary” sci-fi short stories (Slightly Behind and to the Left) that maybe 100 people read. After wrangling arts and social justice nonprofits for 17 years, her already autoimmune-disease-addled body threw a seven-year-long tantrum, leading our then-house-bound heroine into an urban fantasy addiction. A few years, and a dozen Euro-centric-mythology-dominated urban fantasy series later, Claire sat up and said “I can do this!” and Jadie Jang, the part of her brain that writes snarky-fun genre romps, was born. She posts about monkeys every Monday under @seelight on Twitter.

Solaris are delighted to announce the acquisition of Saint Death’s Daughter by World Fantasy Award winner C. S. E. Cooney, coming spring 2022.

The first in a projected series by C. S. E. Cooney’s, Saint Death’s Daughter introduces Miscellaneous “Lanie” Stones, a daughter of royal assassins and necromancer whose allergy to violence is posing significant challenges to her life and career.

Life gets complicated when Death gets involved.

A schedule change for publishing

As we all adapt to the unprecedented times we currently find ourselves in, it has become necessary to make some changes to our publishing schedule through 2020.

It was not an easy decision, but to ensure our books are printed, distributed, and make it to bookshelves around the world safely and on time, we felt it was for the best.

Going forward you may notice some of our titles are available as eBooks before printed books, and some of our previously indicated release dates have changed. We will communicate the dates for each release in promotions, on our website, and on our social media. Online listing dates will update in the next week.
