Solaris to publish thrilling time-slip space opera by Ren Hutchings

Solaris is thrilled to announce the acquisition of Under Fortunate Stars by Ren Hutchings, a time-slip space opera likened to ‘Firefly’ meets ‘The Vorkosigan Saga’, for publication May 2022.

Under Fortunate Stars is author Ren Hutchings’s debut novel and follows a science vessel that rescues a small transport in distress, only to find that aboard are some of the legendary heroes who ended an interstellar war 150 years before. But this crew seem to have led different lives than in the historical record…

World English Rights were acquired by David Thomas Moore from Bridget Smith at JABberwocky Literary Agency.

Author Ren Hutchings had this to say about the release:

“I’ve always been drawn to time travel stories and the endless doors they open. In my writing, I love exploring what happens when ordinary, unprepared people are confronted with extraordinary circumstances and universe-altering choices. I’m also fascinated by the way the popular imagination of a distant historical event can take on a mythical quality. This book is a love letter to so many things that pulled me into genre fiction, and I’m thrilled to be working with David Thomas Moore and Rebellion to bring it to readers!”

Acquiring Editor David Thomas Moore:

“The Millennium Falcon just crashed into the Enterprise in the middle of a time storm, and the Doctor’s nowhere to be found. Under Fortunate Stars is a huge, fun story of hope, redemption and – of course – time travel, and I’m delighted to be getting it out into the world.”

Here’s the blurb:

Stranded in the Dark

In the final throes of the generations-long war with the alien Felen, smuggler Jereth Keeven’s junk freighter breaks down in a strange rift in deep space, with little chance of rescue – until they encounter a science vessel that claims to be from 152 years in the future.

Engineer Uma Ozakka has always been fascinated with the past, especially the desperate peace mission that ended the war with the Felen and ushered in a new age of collaboration – a mission Keeven’s first mate Leesongronski is supposed to be leading right now.

If Ozakka is right, more than the fates of two ships hangs in the balance…
